$56.9 Million Project Improves Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Along US 1 Corridor
As of fall 2024, The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) completed its US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) improvement project. The 1.5-mile project enhances safety and improves traffic flow for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists alike.
Project improvements include:
- Designated bicycle lanes on each side of US 1;
- Widened lanes, two-lane roadways in each direction;
- Widened auxiliary turn lanes;
- Americans with Disability Act (ADA) compliant sidewalks;
- Intersection and pedestrian lighting and additional landscaping;
- Resurfaced roadway, added signage and pavement markings;
- Upgraded drainage and stormwater management facilities and relocation of utilities.

The project incorporated elements of the State Highway Administration’s Context Driven planning and design guide, including continental crosswalks and dedicated bicycle lanes. Upgrades allow for safe, multimodal, travel along the US 1 corridor, which carries more than 35,000 vehicles daily.
