Tired of your current workout routine and ready to try something new? Look no further than Open BarreStudios, College Park’s premiere barre studio. Located above Starbucks in the College Park Shopping Center, OpenBarre offers College Park and area residents a new fitness option that’s fun with friends, easy to learn, and delivers fast results.
For those unfamiliar with the technique, barre is a ballet-inspired workout routine, incorporating elements of Pilates, yoga, and dance. It is designed to be a low-impact method of strengthening and toning the body’s muscles.
Lauren Filocco, University of Maryland alum, opened the studio in 2017, to offer the city’s residents an additional workout option. While there are a few gyms and fitness centers within driving distance, OpenBarre Studios is easily walkable or bike-able for many of the city’s residents, situated in the heart of downtown College Park.
Classes are offered daily, with options ranging from Barre 101 which covers the fundamentals, to Date Night Barre, where two participants work on exercises as a team. Class sizes are relatively small, allowing the instructors to spend time explaining new techniques and working with beginners.
The Friday $5 happy hour class is a great option for those new to barre, or for barre enthusiasts to invite a friend or significant other along. The studio also offers deals after the first class, such as three classes for $30, a discount from the single class flat rate of $14. “That’s how I started teaching here,” said OpenBarre instructor Leeza. “I was a student and I started taking advantage of the great deals and offers.”
“It was definitely one of the more fun ways to work out, said first timer Sam Pudiak, a UMD student. “It wasn’t a chore like going to the gym, and I am feeling the effects the day after!”
Recently, OpenBarre Studios has held Barre and Brunch classes at MilkBoy ArtHouse, a Barre class at the College Park Aviation Museum, and will be holding a “Barre with a View” class at the Hotel at UMD on April 16. With more people living and working in College Park, it is promising to see more fitness and wellness centers to support the daily lifestyles of students, professionals, and residents – and you get a perfect mix of all at OpenBarre Studios.
