When we first visited Milkboy Arthouse in April last year, they had just celebrated their first year of business. Today, this music-loving establishment continues to serve as a popular restaurant, bar, and multi-purpose venue in downtown College Park. Ardent about supporting university students and their talent, and this venue is the place to come for casual entertainment as well as showcases and benefit concerts.
Every week, Milkboy hosts events for guests of all age ranges to play and enjoy music in its dining room and three other venue spaces. Saturdays have become the night for “Open Gem” in the main dining room, where guests can play their live music in an open-mic fashion. The restaurant owners make this event even more exciting by serving as judges to pick a winner each week; at the end of the semester, these finalists get to compete against one another for a chance to record their music at Milkboy’s recording studios in Philadelphia. Guests also have the opportunity to perform at karaoke night on Mondays, which starts at 10:00pm.
Upstairs is “The Venue,” a room that features a full stage and can hold up to 500 people. Here, Milkboy hosts a balance of well-known bands and local, up-and-coming artists from a variety of different genres, in addition to a 21+ party every Tuesday night. Also upstairs is The Gallery, which has hosted art displays for student work, happy hours, and comedy nights. On the ground floor is Milkboy’s third venue area, “The Library.” This room serves as a seated venue for more formal dinner events.
In addition to the great selection of music and events, dining in the restaurant itself is definitely a worthwhile experience. Taylor, who has been working at Milkboy since it opened, attributes much of their customer base to their high-quality food and drinks. “Everything made in the back of the house is fresh,” she affirms. The menu consists of all of the bar food classics—burgers, wings, and even crab chowder. In the past year, the bar has also expanded its signature cocktail list, which includes the Terp Punch, The Handsome, and Sojo. Employees commend the bar’s rotating draft list as well, which is sourced from local, high-quality breweries.
Milkboy is a great space for music, art, food, and more. As they come up on their third anniversary, the restaurant expects to continue seeing a great crowd of college students and locals every night. To see what kind of events are going on at Milkboy Arthouse, check out the calendar of events.
