On the northern edge of College Park’s Hollywood neighborhood, Gailes’ Violin Shop is home to a passionate staff of musicians and music-lovers from all over the world. Located at 10013 Rhode Island Avenue, the shop sells, rents, and services high-quality stringed instruments such as to customers across Maryland and other surrounding states. They also carry a full selection of music and accessories for these instruments.
Before opening the shop in 1975, owner Bill Gailes studied music performance at the University of Maryland. Since then, he has continued to study the making and restoration of violins, while running the shop with his wife, Betty, who teaches music full-time. In total, the staff consists of 8 full-time and 3 part-time employees, including three professional violin-makers, an apprentice, and a professional bow-maker.
Beyond being renowned for their excellent customer service, the violin shop proudly sponsors many orchestral groups in the area, including College Park Youth Orchestra, College Park Youth Players, Prince George’s Philharmonic, Columbia Orchestra, and Chesapeake Youth Orchestra. It also comes highly recommended by music teachers throughout the area for the high quality and low prices of its rental instruments.
Right now, Gailes’ Violin Shop is still recovering from damage due to a fire that took place in December, 2018, and they expect to be done with reconstruction in 2020. Nevertheless, the shop is still fully-functioning, and open six days of the week. Its hours are 10:00am to 6:00pm on weekdays, and 10:00am to 4:00pm on Saturdays.
