If you’re looking for a fun new way to get active and improve your cardiovascular health, Orangetheory Fitness is a great place to get in shape that’s different from your typical gym. Located on Baltimore Avenue next to Cambria Hotel and College Park Grill, this studio offers 60-minute full-body workout sessions that combine treadmill, rowing, dumbbell, and bodyweight exercises to get your heart pumping and improve your endurance, strength, and overall fitness.
Orangetheory prides itself in its science-based approach that yields genuine results through heart rate monitoring—clients receive a monitor to wear on their arm throughout their workout as a certified personal trainer coaches them to strive for the “orange zone”, the optimal heart rate zone for burning calories. Before your first class, an employee will calculate an estimation of your personal heart rate zones based on your age, height, and weight. Once you’ve taken twenty classes and would like to receive a more accurate calculation, they’ll happily customize it for you!
One of the most impressive parts of this entire process is the television screens in the studio that display a “profile” for each client throughout the session with that individual’s current heart rate, amount of calories burned, and the “zone” that they are currently in. This is great for keeping track of your personal progress throughout the session, and perhaps motivating you to push yourself even more.
If you’re concerned about never having done some of the exercises or about not being able to, don’t fear! All ranges of experience and fitness levels are welcome. Coaches walk you through each exercise before you do it, and will happily provide you with a less intense moderation that you feel more confident with. Not a runner or jogger? You can still get the full benefits of the treadmill at an inclined power-walk. Have knees that won’t allow for one of the floor exercises? Let your coach know, and she’ll be happy to provide an alternative.
If you are interested in trying it out, the studio in College Park offers multiple back-to-back classes throughout the mornings and evenings on weekdays, plus a few on weekends. Members can choose between a package of 4, 8, or infinite classes per month, or purchase specific number of classes that are available for use anytime for a full year. Just make sure to book online ahead of time if you plan on coming during the early morning or late evening, because these 24-spot classes tend to fill up!
Last but not least, like any gym or fitness studio should, Orangetheory has lockers and a couple showers for you to store belongings and shower if you need to after sweat session; so squeezing in a workout on the way to the office won’t be a problem.
