Coffee shops are the powerhouses of any college town, but not every town can boast its own bagel shop that offers classic New York style bagels. Bagels ‘n Grinds, located in The Hotel At The University of Maryland, offers bagels, coffee, and much more.
General manager Steven Levy said that he and owner Adam Greenberg were excited to be a part of a college campus community when Bagels ‘n Grinds opened in September of 2017. Now that they are settled in the community, they enjoy having regular customers. “We have certain people that come in every day and we know what they get,” said Levy.
Levy remarked that Bagels ‘n Grinds serves various groups of people in the community. For hotel guests, it’s a quick breakfast spot; for people who work close by, it’s great for lunch; and for students, it’s a study zone. The restaurant offers free Wi-Fi, plenty of outlets, and a conference area where customers can connect their laptops to a TV screen.
What sets these bagels apart is the classic New York taste, one that is recognizable in the first bite. The restaurant features its own water treatment facility that replicates the ultra-purified water of New York. “We purify the water and then we re-mineralize it so that it comes out with a mineral content similar to the water of the Catskill Mountains in New York,” said Levy. To get that perfect recipe, the company sent its head chef to train with a bagel guru in New Jersey.
With plenty of people from the New York/New Jersey area, it’s no surprise that Bagels ‘n Grinds is a big hit among customers. Levy remarked that people often come in and tell them that the bagels are “just like home.”
