In recent months, shopping at small businesses has become increasingly important for supporting our local economy and communities. Unfortunately, with social distancing equally as crucial, shopping locally can be a challenge. However, in response to COVID-19 and the impact that this pandemic has had on small-business owners, the Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation (PGC EDC) has collaborated with Experience Prince George’s and the Prince George’s Chamber of Commerce to develop Buy Prince George’s, an initiative that supports the County’s local economy as well as its residents.
The movement makes supporting small businesses easy for individuals, without putting anyone at risk, by connecting them through an online shopping portal. Instead of leaving their homes to purchase many goods, customers can visit the County Cyber Mall, a webpage that features businesses from all over Prince George’s County. This portal not only provides a link to shop online at each business, but it includes a search bar that customers can use to find the products they are looking for. For example, if you are looking for art supplies, simply enter “art” into the search bar, and the portal will list many relevant small businesses that participate in the program. Of course, some services do require face-to-face contact, and customers seeking such services can use the portal to learn more about small businesses in their area.
Currently, 46 stores are involved in the County Cyber Mall, ranging from clothing boutiques to accounting services. However, all licensed County businesses are encouraged to participate, and business owners who are interested can register by completing this online form. The EDC also encourages participating businesses to promote Buy Prince George’s by placing its logo on their websites and featuring information about the movement in their promotions.
Additionally, for customers who are interested in supporting local restaurants within the County, Experience Prince George’s provides a similar portal for local restaurants on its own website, known as the Foodie Fabulous To Go Guide.
Whether you are a business owner or simply a resident of Prince George’s County, you have the power to support your surrounding community by participating in Buy Prince George’s and shopping locally.
