The College Park City Council and the University of Maryland have agreed to negotiate the development of a child care facility at a former school on Calvert Road. The center will address the pressing need for more day care services in the city.

The school renovation is estimated at $6 million dollars and will be operated by Bright Horizons, a provider of early education, preschools, employer-sponsored child care, and other work/life solutions. The facility will create 120 seats for children under the age of five.

The university and city have long been looking for an opportunity to meet demand with more, high-quality child care options for university, College Park and area families. The university currently operates The Center for Young Children, however, the center does not accept children under the age of three, and the current demand outweighs the center’s available resources. This new project will advance the city and university’s united mission to expand and enhance city-provided services.
